Earlier this month, a Duval County jury awarded more than $495 million in damages to the family of a 20-year-old Florida woman who was murdered in 2011.

Kalil McCoy was shot by Frederick Lee Wade while they rode in a car with three other men, after an argument broke out. The men then dumped McCoy’s body in a wooded area and lied about what happened to police.

Wade was sentenced to 45 years for second-degree murder in 2017. The other men pleaded guilty to accessory charges.

McCoy’s family filed a Florida wrongful death lawsuit two years after the murder. The Florida wrongful death lawsuit named Wade and two other men. A third man was least culpable and difficult to locate so he wasn’t named in the suit, family attorney John Phillips said, via the Florida Union-Times.

The family’s attorney said (via the Associated Press) that he sought an eight-figure award in the Florida wrongful death lawsuit to send a message that violent criminals will “get prosecuted and get punitive damages.”

However, he said it was unlikely the three men would pay the whole judgment.
