The family of a man shot and killed by a Walgreens security guard has announced plans to file a $525 million wrongful death lawsuit against the pharmacy.

Jonathan Hart, 21, was a homeless and gay black man that was accused by a Hollywood, California Walgreens store security guard of shoplifting earlier this month. The security guard allegedly confronted Hart which escalated into a physical altercation, per FOX L.A.

The security guard then allegedly yelled for Hart to freeze and then shot and killed him.

“I dare say, Jonathan Hart was profiled because he was homeless. He was harassed because he was gay and he was shot because he was black,” Hart’s attorney Carl Douglas said during the announcement of the family’s plan to file a $525 million wrongful death lawsuit against Walgreens.

A company spokesman said via the Los Angeles Times that Walgreens has fired the security firm that worked at the store and is cooperating with local and national police.

“We are committed to providing a safe environment for our employees, patients and customers in the communities we serve,” a Walgreens spokesman said. “We contract for armed and unarmed security, as well as video surveillance, in our stores based on the public safety needs of each location.”

The company added in a statement that “everyone should be welcomed and treated equally in all of our stores.”
